Ogoni clean-up: FG launches soil mgt centre, engages 1,200 womenThe Federal Government, yesterday, launched an Integrated Soil Management Centre in Ogoniland as part of processes for the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, report on the area.
Performing the launch at Bori, in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State,

Minister of Environment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, noted that the Ogoni clean-up was part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign promises and that the project would involve investing money in the development of the area. Mohammed, who was accompanied by the Minister of State for Environment and other senior officials of the ministry, stressed that Buhari was interested in the development of the Niger Delta region.

Mohammed disclosed that the Federal Government will commence the clean- up with the training of 1,200 women from Ogoni, noting that women of the area have made a lot of sacrifices in the process. The minister advised traditional rulers, youths and civil society organisations to support the project by making sure that it was a success. She said: “The development of Ogoniland is the priority of this administration under the leadership of President Buhari.

This is the fulfilment of one of his campaign promises. This is in recognition of the fight, struggle, and injustice done against Ogoni people.

“What we want to do is to start something that in the next five years, people will attest to government’s effort. In the next 20 years, we will restore Ogoniland to where it was years ago. Community leaders, youths, women, oil companies, civil society groups, everybody, must participate to ensure that we succeed.

“The clean-up in Ogoni- land is not just for a particular section of people, it is a collective responsibility. Our wives, daughter, mothers and sisters, it is because of them that we continue to have hope for the future. Today, we are going to start with 1,200 Ogoni women in this project.”
