The Vatican sometime last year announced to build shower facilities in St Peters Square for the homeless. Archbishop Konrad Krajewsk, the Pope’s almsgiver came to this idea after a homeless person told him that though it is relatively easy to find places to eat at Rome’s charities, it is difficult to find places to wash. When he told Pope Francis about the project, he immediate gave his support.
Now, the project of providing showers to the homeless has been extended to also offer them haircut and shaves. These services will start February 16, 2015 when the facilities open in an area under the colonnade of the square.
Barbers and hairdressers would volunteer their services on Mondays which is a day their shops are closed traditionally in Italy. They have also donated chairs, hair-cutting instruments and mirrors for this project.
