Recent reports alleges that Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike may make a surprise return to the national team.
If these reports emanating from the Super Eagles camp are anything to go by, former legendary goal keeper Vincent Enyeama and striker, Emmanuel Emenike may be staging a sensational return to the national team set up. According to Nigerian Watch, new coach Samson Siasia is set to recall the pair ahead of next month’s African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifiers against Egypt.
Siasia took over from Sunday Oliseh, whose unceremonious resignation (via Twitter) was a talk of the town last week, and is looking at having the players (who retired from international football last year after falling out with Oliseh) back in the team. Enyeama had objected being made second choice, and ended a 13-year spell with the national team, as Emenike, the leading goal scorer at the 2013 Nations Cup left after five years with the national team.
Siasia, the national U-23 coach as interim manager, will be assisted by Emmanuel Emenike, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu and they will all be in charge of the two ties against Egypt due to take place between March 23 and 29. Speaking on why he might call back both players, Siasia said: “It is an emergency assignment. If the NFF say we should do a rescue job, we have to do it for the sake of Nigeria. “We will go for the best legs, players with commitment, to ensure that we qualify ahead of Egypt. We will look at the players we believe can help the team, including Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike who retired from the team last year.”
The lingering crisis between Oliseh and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took a new twist as the former coach has threatened to drag the football body to court over the N20million he was alleged to have received shortly before he resigned. There were reports that the former team captain decided to dump the national team after he was sure he received N20m in backlog of unpaid wages from the NFF.
In a chat with footballlive.ng, the embattled ex-international denied receiving N20million from the football house, adding that he would involve his lawyers to take up the matter.
