Amidst Defection To APC Reports, Akpabio Meets Buhari In London (photos)

There are speculations that Senator Godswill Akpabio is set to dump the Peoples Democratic Party and dampen the celebration mood in the PDP headquarters over the recent defection of some senators and three governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Now a reverse switch is about to happen with one of the main pillars of the PDP in the south-south crossing to APC.

There are reports that the Senate minority leader has already dumped the PDP and will officially announce his defection on Thursday, August 9 and Nigeria’s acting president, Prof Yemi Osibanjo, will be at Ikot Ekpene stadium to receive him.

Senator Ita Enang, the senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly matters (Senate) also confirmed the unfolding political drama, tweeting:

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akpabio’s political movement appears irreversible as he also visited former Lagos state governor and the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his Lagos home, to seal things up.

Shortly after meeting Tinubu, Akpabio jet out to London to meet President Buhari who is currently on a 10-day vacation.

Bashir Ahmad, the president’s personal assistant on new media, disclosed this via his Twitter handle:

NAN reports that analysts said Akpabio’s crossing over to the APC may flip Akwa Ibom to APC in next February election and at the worst assure President Buhari of capturing 25% of the vote.

It was previously reported that Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC Sokoto) who staged a grand homecoming to Sokoto on Saturday, August 4, said defectors to the PDP and other political parties from the APC will surely regret their actions.

Wamakko stated this at a special rally in support of President Muhammadu Buhari and APC organised by loyalists, in the wake of the defection of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to the PDP from the ruling APC on Wednesday, August 1.

He described the PDP as a dead political party and categorically ruled out Tambuwal’s exit being a threat to APC hold on the state.
