The government of Bayelsa state has promised civil servants in the state that the new minimum wage of N30,000 will be paid by the state government.

This is coming following a peaceful protest by the leaders of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Punch reports.

We gather that the promise was made on Tuesday, October 30, by the state head of civil service, Wellington Obiri, during the protest to the Government House in Yenagoa.

Obiri said: “I want to assure Bayelsa workers that government is in support of your quest for minimum wage. The N30,000 minimum wage will be implemented by the state government.

“In anticipation of that, Governor Seriake Dickson has directed the head of service and the finance committee to start working out the modalities for the implementation of whatever decision that is agreed and such a decision will be adhered to by the government.”

Meanwhile, It was previously reported that Nigeria Labour Congress on Tuesday, October 30, staged a protest at Ikorodu road, Lagos state to complain about the failure of the federal government to accept the new minimum wage of N30,000.

The peaceful protest caused traffic gridlock from the Onipanu bus stop to Obanikoro bus stop as of the time our correspondent filed this report.

The protesters were seen holding flags of the NLC, and sharing fliers, to passersby, which detailed their demands from government.
