President Muhammadu Buhari has announced that June 12 will be celebrated as the new Democracy Day.

The president announced this via his Facebook page on Wednesday, June 6.

The president also announced that the late Chief Moshood Abiola who was adjudged the winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 election will be posthumously awarded the highest Honour in the land, GCFR.

He said: “Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.

“We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 elections.”

Meanwhile, the Senate leader and lawmaker representing Yobe North in the upper chamber, Ahmed Lawan, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is a phenomenon that has come to stay, saying that Buhari is not in the presidency to accumulate wealth but to transform Nigeria.

He made this statement when he received leaders of the North East Youths Coalition for President Buhari at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, Leadership reports.
