President Muhammadu Buhari has launched the Buhari Unity Band (BUB), a collection of the wristbands meant to symbolize Nigeria’s unity ahead of his 2019 presidential campaign.

The initiative was conceived by the good governance ambassadors of Nigeria, a Buhari support group, The Punch reports.

During the launch at the presidential villa in Abuja on Thursday, November 15, the president expressed concerns about the growing threats in the country ahead of the 2019 elections.

Buhari said he is convinced that despite the pockets of violence, Nigerians will remain strong and united through determination.

“Our country has passed through difficult times, on occasions threatening the foundations of our unity, but with the help of God, we have always emerged from each crisis stronger,” the president said.

“There is no doubt that we still have pockets of issues that question our unity but we are convinced that, with the determination of all Nigerians, we shall remain strong and united.

“The Buhari Unity Band is a visual and token symbol of our resolve to live in unity as one and to preach the message of unity wherever we live.

“Those who subscribe to the unity wristband will be known as Nigerian Unity Ambassadors. You will be building on the legacy of a number of our patriots who have, in the past, sacrificed so much, some even their lives, in defense of our nation.”

Meanwhile, the Igbo leaders, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Igbo Leaders of Thought have declared support for Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi for the 2019 presidential election.

Vanguard reports that this was contained in a communiqué read out on behalf of Ndigbo by Chief Olisa Agbakoba.

The group said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate’s promise to restructure the country is why they are supporting his aspiration.
