Early life of Davido
Davido was not born in Nigeria but in Georgia, Atlanta, U.S.A on 21 November, 1992. His father, Chief Adedeji [Deji] Adeleke is a wealthy business man. Chief Deji is the founder of Pacific Holdings, a company which deals on steel, oil, gas and more. On the other hand, his mother Veronica [Vero] Adeleke who is late now, was a university lecturer.
ii. Education and Start of Music
For his education, he went to British International School Lagos. After he finished in this school, he moved over to the United States to do his university studies. His father sent him to study at Oakwood University in Huntsville located in north Alabama. This University is a historically black Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning that provides quality Christian education. At this school, Davido studied Business Administration.
During his enrolment, the school gave him an accommodation which he had to share with another international student. The student was a Rwandan track athlete. However, he was drawn more to an American kid named Jaymo leaving just above his room. Their connection was based on musical interest. Jaymo’s speakers normally rattled Davido’s ceiling. According to Davido, in an interview he granted thefader.com, “One day, I went to go check what the noise was. I went upstairs, opened the door, and the guy had a full studio in his room. I told him that I was trying to do music, too. He asked me, ‘How much do you have to invest in equipment?’ And I said, $2,000. He was like, ‘That’s too much.” After that discussion, as reported by thefader.com, they went to buy musical instrument and equipment worth $500 from Guitar Center.
This was how Davido started making effort to make beats and recording vocal references which he sent to his cousin who lived in Lagos. His attraction to music was a distraction for his main course in school. Consequently, his grades were poor, and after three semesters, he dropped out of school. He did not tell his dad about this.
Later, after he left school he travelled to London and focus on developing his vocals. All the time he was in London, his parents knew nothing about it. Nevertheless, they knew he was missing but could not tell where he was. As reported by thefader.com, Davido recalled this off-radar moment from his parents saying, “There was no Snapchat, no Instagram. There was barely Twitter. I just went off the radar.”
While he was in London, his dad was in hunt for him unsuccessfully. And when he came out of hiding in 2011, flying back to Nigeria, his father got him arrested at the airport in Lagos. Since he had not finished his education in Oakwood, he reached a compromise with his dad to study in a private Nigerian University. This was when he enrolled in Babcock University, Ogun state. Part of the agreement was that his musical ambition would be sidelined until he finished his University education. Regardless, now in Babcock University, he often sneaked out of his dorm room to parties and consequently failed his exams.
His graduation came in 2015 after he took some time off to focus on his blossoming musical career. He released his first singles in 2011 while he was still in school. On a more important note, he found an audience with his second single, “Dami Duro”. This song became one of his biggest hits and he won the blessing of his father to continue with his musical ambition. Consequently, when he openly told his father he does not want to continue with the business course he was doing at Babcock university, his father paid for the university to erect a music department for an inaugural class of one.
In 2015, he graduated with Second Class Upper degree in music, Bachelor of Arts from Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria. Fulfilling one of the major prerequisite for the completion of his programme, the talented artiste wrote a thesis on the topic, “Challenges of Live Performance of Afro-Pop Artists in Nigeria”.

Davido’s Brand and Fan Base
Davido has already an established and popular brand. His name carries a lot of weight in the Nigerian and African music scene. The quality of his music, lyrics, sound, and visuals are one in a kind. He has a unique sound that even if you are sleeping and hear a new released song by Davido, you can guess correctly that it is from him.
How big and popular his brand is can be seen from his social media following. As of 9 April, 2018, on Facebook, he has a following of 3.8 million. On Instagram, he has a following of 6.2 million. Also on Twitter, he has a following of 3.59 million. And on Youtube, he has a following of 539K. Looking at his social media following, he has a huge fan base, a dream of every artist.
Fame they say comes with it some challenges. In the case of Davido, this is evidently true. He has found himself in some controversies that threatened to throw his name to the mud but at the end he came out stronger.
One of the controversies occurred in May 2014 when Davido accused the Nigerian Immigration Service for trying to extort money from him. They delayed him at the airport when he refused and as a result, he missed his flight to London. This was denied by the Public Relations Officer of the NIS who said that Davido’s accusation was false. The delay was because he did not have with him at the time of travel all the requisite documents he needed to travel with.
Later in December 2015, he was involved in another controversy with his baby mama. His baby mama Sophia and him were embroiled in the issue of child custody. Sophia’s family filed a petition against Davido and his family for alleged child trafficking. As a rebuttal, Davido released a lengthy side of his story on his instragram page which was reported by Vanguard Newspaper Nigeria. According to him, “I became the father of a love-child. DNA testing determined with maximum proof that I indeed was the father of my daughter, delivered by a head-butting casual lover, Miss Sophia Momodu. I met Sophia when I was barely 21 years old. She was many years older than me and was able to manipulate and exploit my youth, naivety and generosity. Sophia is the mother of my daughter, and no more! She never would be my wife and she was never qualified for that status. Her background is very dissimilar from mine, and she has very paltry education and equally diminished physical attributes. Cunningly, she moved into my house because she claimed she has no place to stay in Lagos and that her father is late and her mother is resident in Abuja. I have accepted what providence brought my way including my own personal indiscretions. But I also have been burdened by the lapses in the character of Sophia and have thus suffered for my daughter who I love as much as my late mother, Imade. As for the person of Sophia, I paid a two year rent for her apartment at Lekki and she receives a monthly allowance of 300,000 naira from me ever since Imade was born. This December, Sophia received 500,000 naira as her Allowance and Christmas bonus. On a routine hospital check, my daughter was found to be infested with massive dosage of poisonous cannabis that she contracted from the breast feeding regime of her mother’s breast. We still don’t know how much Imade was damaged by this toxic feeding and medical tests and procedures continue to rise and bemuse me and my family members. Already, Imade has special needs and has been treated at the American Hospital,Dubai with all medical costs and travel expenses drawn off my personal purse ever since she was born. On December 29, Imade was supposed to travel, once more, to Dubai for further medical care. A family vacation was attached to this medical trip. But our family plan was truncated by Sophia, her uncle, Dele Momodu in the company of his wife, and all these persons were the significant accessory to the Lagos Airport debacle. It is this incidence of December 29 that made implicitly necessary to bring my family matter to the public domain.”
According to Sophia, her daughter Imade Aurora Adeleke has been with the Adelekes since July, 2015. As a result, she sent a petition to the Director General National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons so that her daughter would not be taken out of the country by Davido and his family.
Nevertheless, Davido did apologize to Dele Momodu, Sophia’s uncle, and his fans over the baby abduction drama. This is what he said, “All these lies being put on me … no be today … I have so much to say but in respect for my daughter I will keep quiet … I apologiz… Mr. Dele Momodu I apologise but …U didn’t have to.”

Davido profile and life history is one that is very inspiring especially for young Nigerians and Africans. This is a young man who is still in his twenties and has achieved all these mentioned. Regardless of the fact that he is from a wealthy family, you cannot take away the truth that he is hard-working and talented. There are many people from rich families that have not made their mark in history like he has done. He is still young therefore his story has not ended. There are still more to tell about him.
