Real Madrid President, Florentino Perez, has made it clear that the Champions League remains the club’s priority this season.
Los Blancos open their latest defence against Roma tonight, as they eye a fourth successive triumph in the competition.
Julen Lopetegui has been given the enviable task of emulating Zinedine Zidane, whose record in Europe was incredible.
El Confidencial quoted Perez as telling the Real Madrid boss that if they can win the competition by beating Barcelona in the final, which will be held at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano, it would even better.
Lopetegui has insisted he is ready to embrace the pressure of Real’s Champions League defence.
“It makes me feel proud, responsible and very excited about a competition which I don’t need to explain what it means to us and what Real Madrid means to the Champions League.
“You can only take your hat off to the players and their coach (for winning three successive Champions League trophies).
“Now I’m going in to each competition with desire, enthusiasm and confidence that we will win. It’s normal that there’s pressure at Real Madrid,” he said.
