– The Barcelona playmaker was looking forward to a decent performance after losing the finals to Chile in 2015 and 2016 editions
– Falcao remains upbeat Messi will return to goalsoring form
Radamel Falcao is drumming support for Lionel Messi, saying the Argentina playmaker is unfairly criticized, but was quick to add it is the prize of “being the best player in the world.”
According to Goal report, the Barcelona playmaker was looking forward to a decent performance for Argentina at the 2019 Copa America, after losing out in the finals to Chile in 2015 and 2016 editions.
However, the Albiceleste suffered a huge setback in their tournament opener going down 2-0 to Colombia’s Tricolor with goals from substitutes Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata, which condemned Messi and teammates to their first defeat in Copa America.
Interestingly, the Barcelona playmaker Messi had an opportunity to break the deadlock with scores still scoreless, but he misplaced his header.
And since the defeat, Messi has being in the middle of criticism among football buffs, but Falcao remains upbeat the Barca captain will return to goalsoring form soon.
“Messi was close to scoring against us, but he is sure to convert in the next couple of matches,” Falcao was quoted as saying moments after Colombia win.
“If Messi scores a goal, people ask for two. If he scores a free-kick, they’ll say the wall wasn’t set up properly. If Argentina lose, it will be talked about like it was his fault.
“That’s the price you pay for being the best player in the world,” noted the former Man United forward, even as he dismissed talks of Colombia being favorites to win Coopa America 2019.
“We can’t think that we are favorites after beating Messi’s Argentina,” Falcao said.
“A lot is missing. We are just starting and anything can happen. If you fall asleep here, you will lose.”
