We’re Aware Of Tough Task Ahead – Mikel

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has admitted that winning the Egypt 2019 Africa Cup of Nations will be tough for the former champions, reports Sports Extra.

Nigeria’s senior national team are making their 18th AFCON appearance after missing out on the last two editions of the tournament held in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Having won the 2013 edition in South Africa, the former Chelsea midfielder is aware of the enormous task of repeating the feat in Egypt but remains confident the Eagles are ready for the battle.

“We all are aware of what is at stake,” Mikel, who is poised for his fifth AFCON appearance with Nigeria was quoted as saying in a media statement from the Communications Department of the Nigeria Football Federation.

“This tournament will not be child’s play or a stroll in the park for any team, but we are ready. It will be tough but when it gets tough, we will get tougher.”

The midfielder, who featured for English Championship side Middlesbrough in the just-concluded season following his short stint in China with Tianjin TEDA, also showered praises on the NFF for their support in preparing the team for the 32nd edition of the tournament.

The three-time champions had their first training in Alexandria Tuesday morning at the Arab Academy for Science, Technlogy and Maritime Transport in the port city. are lodged at the Helnan Palestine Hotel.

Nigeria’s first match at the tournament is against Burundi’s Itamba Mu Rugamba on Saturday, June 22, with games against Barea of Madagascar June 26 and Syli Nationale of Guinea June 30 to come in the group stage.
